Lovell Park Road bridge strengthening

Lovell Park Bridge
Lovell Park Bridge

Lovell Park Road Bridge (L220) is a single span concrete bridge that carries Lovell Park Road/Wade Lane over the A58M Leeds Inner Ring Road to the north east of the city centre.

Works to strengthen the bridge were carried out starting Autumn 2010.

The edge beams on each side of the bridge were to be replaced with new ones, the bridge deck to be waterproofed and the existing road resurfaced.

The bridge was originally built in 1968. Inspections had identified a number of serious defects to the edge beams of the bridge deck.

The two edge beams were planned to be removed on Sunday 24th October 2010. Preparatory work to enable the beams to be lifted out revealed cracking to some of the beams.  Although an extensive inspection and survey of the bridge had been carried out before the start of the works, these cracks could not be seen as they were concealed on the inner faces of the beams.

As a result of the above defects, the works were suspended and the current "One Way" system was implemented.

Lovell Park Road Bridge Phase 2 Works

Leeds City Council has been recently successful in a bid for funding from the Department for Transport in order to carry out works to three structures on the Leeds Inner Ring Road. This includes completing the works that were previously started to Lovell Park Road Bridge.

The existing edge beams will be removed using large cranes and taken elsewhere to be demolished. The beams will be replaced with new beams (also requiring the use of large cranes to install). Both the removal of the existing beams and the installation of the new beams will be carried out over weekend closures of the A58M Inner Ring Road. (For full information regarding times and dates of the Inner Ring Road closures and diversion routes see “Frequently Asked Questions” document and the “Weekend Closure Diversion Routes” drawing)

In the interests of public safety, Lovell Park Road/Wade Lane will be closed to vehicular traffic at the bridge location for the duration of the works. Pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained throughout the works with the exception of the beam lift weekends. (See “Frequently Asked Questions” document for full details of all closures and diversion routes including pedestrians).

Upon completion of the works “Two Way” traffic will be reinstated over the bridge.

Leeds City Council are now preparing to carry out these works with a view to starting on site end of June 2012, lasting until March 2013.
