A65 Kirkstall Road Quality Bus Initiative - Scheme Update 22 – February 2012
Traffic Management
The City bound traffic management on the A65 carriageway, starting at the Northern Snooker Centre and ending at Abbey Street, will remain in place until February 2012. This is to allow the construction of the new kerb line around the Fire Station and to create the new road layout outside Yorkshire Television.
The outbound traffic management on Kirkstall Road, starting at Staples and ending at Benfield Ford, will remain in place for the foreseeable future. Although most of the work has been completed in this area, the three traffic lanes (2 general traffic and 1 bus lane) cannot be opened up to traffic safely until the work up to the Willow Road Junction is complete, in Summer 2012.
Traffic management on Commercial Road, between Beecroft Street and Gilbert Mount, will remain in place until March 2012. The traffic management will enable drainage and carriageway widening works to take place. This arrangement of one lane in each direction will be maintained during all busy times and only slight delays are expected.
Traffic management on Kirkstall Road between Burleywood Mount and Gilbert Mount will remain in place until March 2012. Traffic lanes will be narrowed to 3.25metres to allow drainage works to be carried out safely. The current arrangement of one lane in each direction will be maintained during all busy times and only slight delays are expected. To reduce hold ups and allow traffic to pass, lay-bys will be provided wherever possible for buses to drop off and pick up passengers.
Gilbert Mount will be closed week commencing Monday 6 February 2012 between 07:00 and 17:00. During these times, local diversions will be in place (see Plan 3 Traffic Management - June 2010). The closure is to provide safe access for construction vehicles and for surfacing works to take place on the main carriageway. The closure will be in place for approximately 5 days.
Studio Road will be closed week commencing 13 February 2012 for approximately 5 days between 09:30 and 15:30. This is to allow carriageway surfacing works to take place safely. Diversion routes will be in place (see Plan 23 – Feb 2012).
Sacred Heart footpath will be closed during the school holidays, week commencing Monday 13 February 2012, to install new steps. A pedestrian diversion route will be in place (see Plan 21 – Dec 2011).
Day works
Birfed Crescent – The junction of Birfed Crescent, with Kirkstall Road, will be closed from 09:00 until 16:00 during the 8 and 9 February 2012. Temporary parking will be made available to residents during this time (see Plan 22 – Feb 2012). The closure is to allow surfacing works to take place and the Birfed Crescent entrance to be reconstructed.
Beecroft Street to Woodside View – Drainage works are now complete throughout this section. The new road and footway construction has begun and work is expected to be completed in this area by the end of March 2012.
Willow Road Junction – Work to install a new traffic signal system and footway crossing facilities is now complete. Further kerbing and footway works will be required in this area during 2012.
Willow Road to West Street Dual Carriageway – Construction of the new road and central reservations has commenced on the northern side of Kirkstall Road. Road surfacing has been placed in this area and the new road layout can be seen taking shape when travelling eastbound into Leeds. This section of the works will open on 24 February 2012. Studio Road has now re-opened to two-way traffic.
Night works
Willow Road to Bingley Street – 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 February 2012 – Surfacing works will take place with inbound road closures and temporary traffic signals. Traffic will be diverted via Willow Road and Burley Road, plans showing the diversion route will be posted on this website in February.
Further traffic management and closure updates will be posted on this page as they become available. Dates given for closures are approximate and may be subject to change at short notice, particularly at this time of year when prolonged periods of adverse weather may affect progress.
News
A new signalised pedestrian crossing, near the Fire Station, giving access across both carriageways is now operational.
