The Sports Development Unit (SDU) strives to encourage and motivate people to take part in sport and physical activity in a wide variety of exciting and imaginative ways. From young to old, beginner to elite, the unit has many opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to participate in sport.
We try to make sport and physical activity as exciting and rewarding as possible, resulting in improved health and wellbeing. Where appropriate our staff will work with individuals to help realise their true sporting potential. On a wider scale the service works with local communities, contributing to improved quality of life for local residents and prioritising areas of social deprivation to help ‘close the gap'.
The SDU is one of the largest in the United Kingdom with 30 full time officers and coaches. This includes a community sports team with six officers each covering a different area of the city, an equity officer and a positive futures team that are managed by a senior community sport officer. There are also 9 sports-specific development officers who support and develop after-school activities, coach education opportunities, sports club development and events across the following sports/activities:
Sport Development has also developed a range of performance sports programmes, often in partnership with national governing bodies and other local providers. These include: gymnastics, swimming, diving, tennis and badminton
The pages in this section offer a taste of what our Sport Development Unit has to offer, and more importantly what we can do for you, your family, your club and your community. However you choose to participate in sport and physical activity – whether it’s to play, coach, compete or spectate – with the 2012 Olympics on the horizon, there has never been a better time to get involved.
