You are never too young to join the library

Bookstart is a national scheme offering free books to every child and advice to every parent.

It encourages parents and carers to share books with children from a very early age. It is based on the belief that it's never too soon to share books with babies and that children introduced to books at an early age start school with an advantage, that can last throughout their life.

Bookstart works with Leeds Library and Information Service, health visitors and early years settings to introduce books to babies and pre-school children. The Bookstart bag contains two high quality baby books, advice and information about the benefits of sharing books at this age and an invitation to join the local library. Packs are usually delivered to parents/carers by the health visitor at a baby’s 7-9 month health check and can also be obtained from your local library.

The Bookstart treasure box contains two high quality picture books especially chosen for pre-schoolers, colouring pencils and handy tips on reading with your pre-schooler.

It is delivered to 3-4 year old pre-school children via early years settings, such as children's centres and early years centres. Libraries and mobile libraries are secondary access points for these two packs.

The health visitors and early years settings are fully supported by Leeds Library and Information Service, in providing essential advice and support.
