Who provides adaptations?
Leeds City Council provides more than 2,000 major adaptations in older and disabled people’s homes every year. These take place in owner occupied properties, privately rented housing, housing association homes and council properties.
What is an adaptation?
Adaptations are improvements or repairs that can help disabled and older people to live safely and independently in their own homes.
Examples of adaptations can include
- Rails on paths and stairs.
- Ramps.
- Wider doorways.
- Stair-lifts.
- Lever taps.
- Walk in showers.
- Chair or bed raisers.
Who will pay for the work?
Council tenants
Your local ALMO has a budget for adapting homes. This includes the full range of work. If you live in Belle Isle the BITMO also has a budget for this type of work.
Owner-occupiers, housing association tenants and private tenants
We can provide some equipment and carry out some minor works.
A Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) of up to £30,000 is available to fund some major adaptations. This budget is managed by our Adaptations Agency. To find out if you qualify for a DFG we would have to undertake a financial assessment and look at your income and savings as you may have to pay a contribution towards this work.
If the work is for Children you will automatically qualify for a grant. Some Housing Association tenants will also automatically qualify.
