Social care - about us

Leeds Social Care supports older people, people with mental health problems, people with a sensory impairment, physically disabled people, people with learning disabilities and other people with special needs. We also have a responsibility to protect people from abuse and neglect.

Most of our services are divided into Services for Children and Services for Adults and the information here is set out similarly.

Supporting adults

Some of the ways we may be able to help:

  • Information and advice.
  • A care assessment to see what is needed.
  • Help with daily living through home care services.
  • Equipment and adaptations to promote independence.
  • Residential and day services.
  • Support when people leave hospital.
  • Meals on wheels.
  • Short term breaks.
  • Housing support and warden services.
  • Support for carers.
  • Direct payment schemes.
  • Emergency support services;
    ...and many others.

Many of these services are provided jointly with other organisations and with other Leeds City Council departments. We work in partnership with voluntary and community organisations to deliver services and increasingly with our colleagues in health.

Supporting children and families
Social Care works with other organisations to help and support children in need, such as:

  • disabled children and children who are ill.
  • vulnerable children who need help and support.
  • children who are at risk of being harmed or abused.

Finding out what's needed
Families have a right to be assessed to get the services they need. A social worker will organise an assessment. Families can work with social workers and other organisations to help them decide what help they need, and to arrange the support and services they require.

Working with health, education and other organisations
We try to work closely with other organisations and aim to provide a co-ordinated service for children and their families.

Together we will work out which services suit your needs
Here's just some of the ways we may be able to help:

  • Social work advice and support.
  • Planned short-breaks (respite care).
  • Family placement.
  • Family aide scheme.
  • Family resource centres.
  • Equipment and adaptations.
  • Adoption.
  • Foster care.
  • Children in trouble – the Youth Offending Team.
  • Child protection.
  • Leaving care and after care.

Our services are open to people of all ages and from all cultures and backgrounds. We believe that children should be able to live in a happy and loving environment. We will help families get support and information so that this can happen.

We work closely with Health services, Housing services, Education, Voluntary and Private organisations to make sure that people get the help and support they need.

If you need help or support from Social Care:
If you think that you might need any of these services, Social Care will need to complete a care assessment to see exactly what is needed and how it could be best provided.
