Carers in Leeds demographics

The Census 2001 provided the following information on carers in Leeds:

  • 70,446 people in Leeds (9.85%) identified themselves as providing unpaid care, of these
    14,369 provided 50 hours or more per week
    7,631 provided between 20 and 49 hours per week
    48,446 provided up to 20 hours per week
  • The age groups were as follows
    1,232 carers aged 0–15 years (1.74%), of which 108 provided 20–49  hours per week of care
    52,983 carers aged 16–65 years (75%)
    16,215 carers aged 65 years and over (23%)
  • It is known that carers’ own health worsens as their age increases.
  • People aged 45 to 60 years were most likely to be carers, as a proportion of the whole population.
  • Of the population over 50 years old in Leeds, 32% provided care at some level. 
  • Among carers in the age groups 75 years and over as well as 85 years and over, half of these were providing over 50 hours of care per week.
  • Women outnumbered men as carers until after age 75 years when men outnumbered women.
  • 13% of carers were in full time work.
  • 6.29% of carers were from a black or ethnic minority community.
