Carers may be husbands, wives or partners, sons and daughters or other relatives, or friends and neighbours who help look after someone who is frail, ill or disabled. They may also be a child or young person helping to care for a parent or other adult with whom they live.
Social Services have a duty to talk to carers about their relative’s situation, give information about services and benefits, and discuss a carer's own needs. Carers providing a lot of care have a legal right to an assessment of their own needs.
There is a range of practical support in the home for carers, and workers can also enable carers to have a break. The services are free to carers. Contact the organisation for your area for more information:
