Severe Weather events are not preventable but are quite often predictable. The Meteorological Office issue Severe Weather Warnings by fax to Leeds City Council when a forecast has been made for weather conditions which may cause considerable disruption to traffic conditions, damage property or even present a danger to life.

Such weather conditions include high winds, intense or prolonged rainfall and heavy snow.

Advice on what you can do in the case of severe weather can be found in the ‘Snow advice’ and ‘Storms advice’ documents.

Information concerning research on climate variability and climate change, and the possible effects on the frequency of severe weather, can be found on the ‘Met Office – Climate Variability’ link.
