Who responds to an emergency

At the scene of a major emergency you will see many different emergency response teams.

Police

  • Protection of life and property, co-ordination of the overall response and co-ordination of evacuation

Fire and rescue service 

  • Tackling fires, rescue of trapped casualties and dealing with chemical incidents and spillages

Ambulance service

  • Treatment and transportation of casualties to hospitals, co-ordination of overall medical response and de-contamination of patients

Local authority

Volunteer organisations

  • Support of the emergency services and community, examples include British Red Cross Society, St John Ambulance, WRVS, The Samaritans and the RSPCA
