Conservation area appraisals

Introduction

The Council has a duty to clearly define why an area has been designated as a conservation area, to outline its special interest and publish proposals for its preservation and enhancement. This information is given in a conservation area appraisal and management plan.  As part of the work to produce appraisals, the Council will take the opportunity to review conservation area boundaries to ensure that they best represent areas of special character and historic interest.

To date 12 of the conservation areas have up-to-date appraisals:

  • Armley
  • Chapel Allerton
  • Chapeltown
  • Far Headingley
  • Holbeck
  • Horsforth
  • Gledhow Valley
  • Meanwood
  • Methley Church Side
  • Newlay
  • Otley
  • Roundhay
  • West Park

Funding has been secured for the following appraisals to be completed by the end of March 2009.

  • Bardsey
  • Boston Spa/Thorp Arch
  • Bramley Town Street
  • Bramley Hough Lane
  • Calverley - at consultation
  • Morley
  • Pudsey
  • Rothwell
  • Thorner - awaiting completion
  • Wetherby
  • Whitkirk - at consultation

Work is also underway on reviewing the conservation areas in and around the city centre linked to a City Centre Area Action Plan being developed as part of the Local Development Framework.

The eventual aim is to have appraisals in place and reviewed every five years for all the conservation areas to provide the basis for making informed decisions in the positive management, protection and enhancement of the conservation areas.

As the appraisals become available they will be added to the list of downloads on the right.

Consultations are now running for Calverley and Whitkirk conservation areas

This draft stage allows you to participate in the process and have your say on what you feel is important in the conservation area, whether the boundary is appropriate and how you think it should be managed in the future.

Community involvement is an essential part of the appraisal process and local residents and other interested parties are encouraged to comment on the draft document. Your views are important to the Council and will be taken into consideration before the final document is published.

The deadlines for responses are:

  • Calverley by 16 January 2009
  • Whitkirk by 9 February 2009

During the consultation period the draft appraisals can be downloaded here. Copies are also available for viewing at local libraries and at the reception of the Leonardo Building, 2 Rossington Street, Leeds LS2 8HD.
Comments can be made in the following ways:
