Education provision for children of school age in Leeds

Education Leeds is responsible for providing all education support services for children and young people of statutory school age in Leeds. Education Leeds is a not-for-profit company, wholly owned by Leeds City Council. The company was established in April 2001 and is a unique partnership between the council and private sector support service company, Capita. Education Leeds operates under a direction from the Secretary of State for Education and Skills.

Primary schools
Most Leeds primary schools serve the 5 to 11 age range, but there are also a number of infant schools (for ages 5 to 7) and junior schools (for ages 7 to 11). All local authority primary schools offer a comprehensive education and cater for children of all abilities. All the schools are non-selective, which means there is no testing or exam procedure for entry and all offer free education.

Secondary schools
There are three types of secondary schools in Leeds;

• Community schools are run by Education Leeds and schools places are offered by Education Leeds.
• Voluntary-aided schools. These are usually Catholic and Church of England secondary schools and have a greater emphasis on religious education. The governing body of each school decides its own policy on admissions and takes responsibility for offering school places.
• Community special schools are run by Education Leeds, admission to these schools is based on a statement of special educational need.
