Leeds City Council signs up to the Nottingham Declaration

Nottingham Declaration

Leeds City Council has become the latest authority to show its commitment to climate change by signing the Nottingham Declaration.

By signing the declaration the council has agreed over the next two years to develop plans with partners and local communities to progressively address the causes and impacts of climate change.  Addressing the effects of climate change will also bring social, environmental and financial benefits for the  authority and for businesses, agencies and organisations working in the area.

To demonstrate Leeds City Council’s commitment to climate change the Chief Executive and the Leader signed the Declaration on 5th June 2006– World Environment Day at a climate change discussion forum.  The forum was hosted by an inter-departmental climate change working groups and was attended by elected members, key stakeholders and partners from the Leeds Initiative.

As a result of this successful meeting city-wide working groups will continue to meet to produce a Climate Change Strategy and Action plan to deal with the cause and effects of a changing climate on the Leeds area.  The theme groups will work individually on focussed areas of work;

  • Planning and development
  • Adaptation
  • The built environment
  • Waste
  • Transport
  • The natural environment
  • Education and awareness
  • Procurement

and each group will then contribute to the overarching Climate Change Strategy group.
