Description of scheme

Now in its fifth year, this annual competition celebrates the amazing contributions that Leeds community groups, residents, schools, businesses and students make to their local environment.  They have organised litter picks, create wildlife gardens, set up waste minimisation or recycling schemes and many more small scale environmental projects. The categories are:

  • Reduce and Reuse Project of the Year
  • Recycling Project of the Year
  • Small Area Improvement Project of the Year
  • Larger Area Improvement Project of the Year
  • Green Space Creation Project of the Year
  • Business and Community Partnership Project of the Year
  • Engaging Under 11s Project of the Year
  • Engaging Under 18s Project of the Year
  • Under 18s Individual Contribution of the Year
  • Over 18s Individual Contribution of the Year

Leeds City Council and Groundwork help groups by lending equipment for free, and several sponsors contribute to the prizes and the evening dinner.  Closing date is end of October, judging is in November, and short listed groups from each category are invited to the gala dinner in Jan 2009.  Our guest host will be Paul Hudson, BBC Look North’s TV weatherman and climate correspondent.  In attendance at the dinner and awards are short listed entrants, sponsors, Councillors and Council officers.
