We collect non-recyclable waste from your home. Your non-recyclable waste goes to the local landfill site into a hole in the ground. Here is a virtual tour of the landfill site. The council are trying to reduce waste going to landfill using various methods including reducing, reusing, recycling and composting.
We collect non-recyclable waste from you on the same day each week. At Christmas and New Year this day may change and we will let you know which day your bin will be emptied instead.
We will provide you with either;
- a wheeled black bin
- black bin bags (for homes where it is difficult to get a wheelie bin in and out); or
- trade bins (for high rise flats).
An assisted collection service is provided to residents who are unable to place their refuse for collection through reasons of ill health, disability or age. To find out more about this service please contact us.
Replacement bins are normally only provided if your bin has been lost, stolen or damaged. If you live in privately rented accommodation it is your landlord's responsibility to provide you with a bin.
Please contact us on 0113 2224406 between 08:00 and 18:00 Monday to Friday. Please be aware that Monday morning is the busiest time at the contact centre.
In order for your waste to be collected you need to:
- put your rubbish in the bin provided;
- put your bin out onto the street by 07:00 am on your collection day;
Please take your bin back to your property the day it has been emptied.
If your bin has been missed, please check that:
- You have left the bin at the correct collection point
- You have put your bin out on time
- You have not put heavy or large items inside the bin
- Your bin is not damaged
If you have followed these instructions and your bin has still been missed please let us know.
What do I do if my rubbish is too big or bulky?
Do not put your large items out with your black bin/bags. Please take your extra waste to a household waste sorting site. To find out where your nearest site is use the link on this page.
