What can I recycle, compost and dispose of at a HWSS?
You can recycle, compost or dispose of most things at a HWSS (for a list see the downloadable document recycling – a what and where guide),
- sort out your recyclables/waste before you leave home;
- recycle or compost as much as you can and use the general landfill skip as the last resort;
- HWSS do not accept business waste.
- To dispose of asbestos or other hazardous waste, there is a special procedure you must follow to protect the Health and Safety of our customers and staff. Please see our Hazardous Waste advice first.
You can also use recycling banks, often known as bottle or paper banks, which are usually found in the car parks of supermarkets, shops and public houses. A variety of materials can be recycled including glass, paper (newspapers, magazines and books), textiles, cans and plastic bottles. The range of materials will vary from site to site.
Please telephone the contact centre on 0845 124 0113 if:
- the site is not clean and tidy;
- you would like to know where your nearest recycling bank is and what you can recycle there;
- you have any suggestions for suitable locations for new recycling banks;
- you can also do a postcode search for your nearest recycling bank locations through the recycle-more website, the link to the site is on this page.
Please remember the environmental contact centre is open Monday to Friday between 08:00 - 18:00. Please be aware that Monday morning is the busiest time at the contact centre.
Vehicle restrictions at household waste sorting sites
If you are using a van to get rid of household waste you can only dispose of your waste on a Wednesday and Saturday. This is to ensure that trade waste is not being disposed of illegally by businesses at household waste sorting sites.
We only accept waste from Leeds residents and you can only dispose of your own household waste.
What to do if you need to dispose of trade waste?
It is illegal to dispose of trade waste at Household Waste Sorting Sites.
Businesses have a legal responsibility to safely contain and dispose of their waste. When trade waste is disposed of you must obtain a "Waste Transfer Note" to provide proof of how you have disposed of your waste.
Businesses can dispose of their waste at a private waste disposal site or at our waste transfer station. At the waste transfer station you will be asked to drive on to the weighbridge and will be charged according to the weight of your waste.
Due to redevelopment work taking place at East Leeds Household Waste Sorting Site, trade or commercial customers are not currently able to use this site for disposal of their waste or to use the public weigh bridge. Please go to the Notice to trade customers using East Leeds Household Waste Sorting Site link on the right hand side of this page for further details.
Leeds City Council's waste transfer station is
Evanston Avenue
Kirkstall Road
Leeds
LS4 2HR

Waste is currently charged at £94.29 per tonne, minimum charge £47.89.
Alternatively businesses can arrange for a waste contractor to collect and dispose of their waste. If you are found disposing of your waste illegally you will be prosecuted. The maximum penalty is a fine of £50,000 or 12 months imprisonment.
