What is the cleaner, greener, Leeds campaign?
The cleaner, greener, Leeds campaign is a people-led campaign to improve the cleanliness of Leeds.
Cleaner, greener, Leeds will:
- Work with communities and schools to deliver a community education scheme
- Deliver environmental improvements
- Improve appearance of main roads and streets
- Enhance and improve bin yards and open spaces across Leeds
- Work with schools to participate in a litter awareness programme
- Work with community groups to clean up and enhance local areas
- Encourage local businesses to keep their premises clean
What is Leeds City Council doing?
Environmental Pride teams have been set up in each of the five wedges within the city. The teams undertake tasks such as graffiti removal, minor construction works, horticultural works and intensive cleaning. This work has produced amazing results with residents asking the question “Is the Queen coming?”
Alongside the day to day street cleansing work that takes place the council has entered into an innovative partnership with Groundwork Leeds (an environmental voluntary/community sector charity). Groundwork consult and engage with local communities and groups on improvements to main roads and gateways, open spaces and shared bin yards in the most deprived areas in Leeds.
To improve awareness of environmental issues Groundwork are delivering an education programme in local primary schools on behalf of the council. Litter education enforcement officers are also working with high schools in Leeds to ensure they understand their role and responsibility regarding littering. Where necessary enforcement officers issue fixed penalty notices for a variety of environmental crimes including dog fouling, littering and waste offences.
Report online You can report graffiti, fly posting, dumped rubbish or spillages and abandoned vehicles or shopping trolleys.
Who is involved in the campaign?
Everyone has a part to play: residents, businesses, council departments, voluntary organisations and community groups.
Cleaner greener Leeds is not just an issue for the council but for all those who, live, work, play and visit the city.
Groundwork Leeds will work with communities and schools to deliver environmental improvement projects and will encourage the community groups and schools to submit their projects into the ‘Community and City pride awards’ run by Leeds City Council. Their contact details are shown on this page.
How can I get involved?
Most people can think of an area in their community that could do with a facelift. This might be a green space that has been used to dump rubbish, a school play area that needs brightening up or a local pathway which has become overgrown. This local knowledge is vital and you have it.
If communities take ownership for an area it is much more likely to stay green, clean and well maintained.
There are success stories all over the city and yours could become another. Get involved and let us know what needs doing in your local area and we will support you to make it better.
