Equality is about promoting fairness. We aim to embed equality across all our services and ensure that we do not unfairly discriminate against particular individuals and communities.
We value people's diversity and understand that each individual is unique and will have different experiences, expectations and needs.
By raising awareness and understanding, breaking down barriers we aim to develop shared values and mutual respect and trust among our Leeds Communities to tackle discrimination and build cohesive communities.
A promotional campaign, 'What makes us different, makes us Leeds,' ran between October 2007 and January 2008 to help promote equality and celebrate diversity across Leeds.
To support the campaign there were two radio adverts broadcasted on Radio Aire, posters and postcards distributed and a short promotional film produced, which is currently being shown on the big screen, Millennium Square. You can view the promotional film from this page by following the What us Different, Makes us Leeds weblink.
As part of the campaign an independent survey was carried out to get residents views on a range of issues about the city, where they live and how well the felt they got along with people around them. Results from the survey will be published here when they are available.
Our Equality and Diversity Scheme has been developed to ensure that people are not unlawfully discriminated against because of their:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender
- Race
- Religion or beliefs
- Sexual orientation
We have produced an equality calendar for 2008 which includes information in relation to the six equality areas listed above and includes dates of key religious festivals and other related equality events. The calendar is available to download as a PDF document from this page.
For the second year running, we have been officially named as one of the UK’s top 100 employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual people in Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index. Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index is the national benchmarking exercise showcasing Britain’s top employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual staff.
