Council housing - squatters and unauthorised occupants

If a council property is empty it is usually because it needs repairs before a new tenant can move in. Your local housing Arms Length Management Organisation (ALMO) will do what it can to re-let these homes as quickly as possible.

Sometimes people move into one of our empty properties without our permission. People who do this are sometimes called “squatters”.  The only way the Council and the ALMOs can evict a squatter is by going to court.  The laws on squatting are complicated, which means it can take longer than we would prefer for us to get our property back.

We may not know when this has happened and we would welcome any information that you may have. If you think there may be squatters in a property that you know should be empty, please contact us as soon as possible. We will treat any information you give us in the strictest confidence.
