Hospice and palliative care in Leeds

Hospices provide palliative care for patients with life-threatening illnesses, along with help and advice for carers. Care can also be provided in the community, through day services. Most people receiving hospice services have cancer, but care is also provided for people with HIV-related illness and some advanced, degenerative, neurological disorders such as motor neurone disease.

Some private nursing and rest homes also specialise in the care of the terminally ill. Support is provided for carers before and after the death of a patient. Macmillan Nurses work at the hospices and can be contacted there.

The main hospices in Leeds are St Gemma's Hospice, Sue Ryder Care Wheatfields, and Martin House (children) – see their contact details below. Admission is arranged through your doctor or hospital consultant and they should be able to advise you about these and any others in your area, and how to apply to them.

Care at home

Many people with life-limiting illnesses choose to stay in their own homes and be treated there. The hospices below also provide community support for patients in their own homes or nursing homes, and a day hospice.
